Gossip As Epic As WW At Bar League Softball!

  1. DEPT. OF SHAMELESS SPORTING SELF-PROMOTION: Congratulations, team Willamette Week! Sunday night under the bright lights at Farragut Park, WW beat defending champion the Slammer to win the 2010 Sunday Softball crown—and the giant trophy that goes with it. Team WW—led by captain (and MusicfestNW assistant) Dan Winters and graphic designer Adam Krueger (pictured at right)—won by a final score of 9-5, despite team injuries including a “bloody, disconnected fingernail” and pulled hamstring. The team held the Slammer scoreless until the final inning. The best part? The 3-foot baseball-bat trophy (check the slideshow on wweek.com for pictures) is ours to keep for the next 361 days.

BUNK SOUNDS: Bunk Bar—Tommy Habetz’s freshly opened sandwich shop/pub combo at Southeast Yamhill Street and Water Avenue—made its debut as a music venue on Saturday night, with minimal SoCal surf punk act Wavves playing a last-minute set on a last-minute stage constructed in the days preceding the show. Bladen County Records founder Matt Brown, the club’s booker, seems to have booked the right band to kick things off. As WW’s Shane Danaher noted in his show review for wweek.com: “The crowd at Bunk Bar, and the bar itself, has affected an air of cosmopolitan refinement...into this milieu Wavves comes screaming like a straight dose of neon-colored id.” Sounds tasty. Bunk Bar will be an official MusicfestNW venue on Saturday, Sept. 11, playing host to acts like the Parson Red Heads and AgesandAges.
  1. CUTTING CREW: Last week’s episode ofProject Runwayproved that not all Portlanders are nice, passive-aggressive types. PDX designer Gretchen Jones, who won the first two contests of the season on the Lifetime network show, and henceforth became intolerable to her fellow contestants, bullied and manipulated the other designers after being chosen to participate with them for a group challenge. This prompted contestant April to issue the meanest statement thus far in the season: “Do you want to hire Hitler?” she asked. “Seriously?” Some will argue Gretchen’s utter bitchiness is the result of selective editing on the part of Project Runway producers.   2. DEPT. OF SHAMELESS INTERN-PROMOTION: Just when we thought this week couldn’t get any more winning, we received news that WW intern and filmmaker Riley Hooper won Amstel Light’s One Dam Good Town national video contest. Her documentary, Seed to Plate: A Garden Story, profiles the rooftop vegetable garden atop Noble Rot wine bar and restaurant. It received the most votes on Vimeo (beating out films from New York and Boston and Seattle), earning Hooper a trip to show her movie in Amsterdam on Sept. 10.
