Cheap Eats 2010

The decor at this music-themed cafe and open-mic bar is seriously out of tune, from the hokey Tron-meets-Portland bridges mural to the album and Life mag covers (Herb Alpert and Bing Crosby?) that adorn the beige walls. But inside this bland shell lurks some great, eclectic lunch fare. It's the vegetarian sides that shine the brightest: creamy, tomatoey corona beans that taste like an XXL-sized baked-bean picnic on a plate; crispy, sesame-spiced Asian slaw and addictive roasted sweet potatoes tossed with sunny yellow squash ($2.50 each). There's homey ovals of meatloaf and fragrant smoked brats to be had with those sides, or a giant teriyaki steak salad ($7.50) that overcomes its load of grainy meat with a blast of flavor from its well-dressed greens, big hunks of pickled cucumber, green onions and vermicelli noodles.
