Restaurant Guide 2005

Karam translates to "generous," which describes a dining experience at this cozy downtown hideaway in every way. But its beautiful atmosphereincluding tapestry-draped walls, map-inlaid tables and lyrical Mediterranean musicalso makes it a getaway. Wonderfully attentive, friendly service patiently takes you through Karam's extensive list of specialty drinks, including a rose-liqueur-infused martini or Prieur Ksara, the spicy house wine. Start with the batenjan mekle, lightly grilled eggplant in olive oil and lemon juice, served with tahini and feta, or the baleela, hot hummus with garbanzo beans and tahini sauce. Then dig in to the tender goat casserole. When you're stuffed and the music's a bit lulling, a jolt is easy with some Turkish coffee and a sweet dessert: Try the world's best baklava and the melty knafe, shredded filo with sweetened cheese, both covered in housemade rose sauce.
