Ask any Portlander and you'll get the same answer: Nicholas Restaurant is the place to go for excellent Lebanese and Middle Eastern food that doesn't cost a fortune. Those who wish to go to Nicholas on a Friday night to satisfy cravings for fresh and delicious hummus and pita should come early and come hungry. Portion sizes are beyond generous and the tiny, brightly decorated restaurant is consistently packed on weekend nights. The mezza platter for one ($8.75) is enough for two, and comes with hummus, falafel, tabouli and your choice of meat or a vegetarian/vegan option. The savory lamb platter ($12.75) will leave you with enough leftovers to last three days. The giant pita ($2.50) is also a crowd-pleaser, fresh from the oven and so big it has to be served on its own stand so as not to take up the entire table.
