Drink 2010

Think of this unassuming little bar as the mullet of Southeast Portland: a chill room filled with neighbors drinking pints of bitter Ninkasi Spring Reign up front and a raucous, divey chamber ringing with the ping of two pinball machines (Elvis and No Fear) and the sound of balls thwacking each other across a trio of pool tables in the back. Regardless of your mood, this garnet-colored spot will accommodate you without much fuss. Devour a gooey high/lowbrow grilled cheese ($5, American squares on good sourdough from Grand Central across the street) and a bowl of spicy chili and don't pass up the puckery-wonderful margaritas—that industrial juicer sitting right on the top of the bar gets a lotta use.
What to drink: A pint of Deschutes Black Butte porter, PBR, juice-based cocktails.
Happy hour: $3 micros, half-price well drinks, $2.95 pub menu; 3-7 pm daily. Happy hour drink prices all day Sunday.
Entertainment: Free pool and interesting bathroom graffiti; oddball weekly discounts, from Tuesday "Mustache Night" (facial majesty nabs you happy-hour prices on drinks) to "Hot for Teacher" Thursday (the same deal for those with proof they're an "educator").
