Cheap Eats 2009

Canby Asparagus Farm's steaming tamales, sold at local farmers markets for more than a decade, have found a permanent home, along with a full Mexi-menu, at this restaurant just south of Sellwood. There are only six tamales on the menu ($6.50, $9.50 with rice and beans), but you can choose from around 40 types—with 20 vegetarian or vegan options—if you call ahead. The nacatamal ($9, $12 with rice and beans), a Nicaraguan-style tamale the size of three normal tamales, is plump with pulled chicken, ripe bites of cooked plum, diced potato, small green olives and raisins. And don't miss the delicious empanadas ($6) or the carnitas plate ($10 at lunch, $12 for dinner).
