So your dream trip to Japan is receding on the life map. Get in your Japanese car, navigate the culinary desert of Southwest Portland and plumb the big box of Japanese wonders that is Uwajimaya and its side attraction, Hakatamon. Slurp toothsome yakiudon ($10.25), crunch feathery vegetable and prawn tempura ($9.95) and savor extravagantly proportioned sushi rolls ($2.50-$8.50) and tender chicken katsu ($8.95). One upside to the downturn: You might score a table at Hakatamon without waiting. It probably won’t be a very good one, but once the dishes start coming, you won’t care; Japan won’t seem so far away.
