Devour 2010

[MIDDLE EASTERN] There always seem to be at least a few folks milling around this small shop, chatting and snacking on sambusas and "mash-mash," a pastry resembling a fried pancake doused in syrup. Most of the shelves are stacked with the regular staples found at Portland's independent international markets, but with a slight Mediterranean flair: spices, sun-dried tomatoes, dates, honey and sacks of rice abound. Cooking pots, hookahs and traditional clothing populate the store as well. And if you place an order with one of the guys working there, they'll pick up freshly prepared halal meat from a local slaughterhouse for you.

Grocery list: Frozen and fresh halal meat, ghee (clarified butter), qahwa ginger, juwar (sorghum) flour.
