More than a mere appetizer to the Objectivist Happy Meals director Brad Bird would go on to make for Pixar, The Iron Giant
is one of the last, doomed stands of hand-drawn animation, and the rare
American cartoon that can rival the work of Hayao Miyazaki for
enveloping woodland quiet. (Bird must have spent some time out in the
Corvallis firs.) For viewers of a certain religious background, the
movie is an emotional wrecking ball: Its hero is a divine visitor who
functions as a combination muscular metal father figure and loyal pet,
which is how a lot of us pictured Jesus anyway. Laurelhurst.
