Imagine that you are a mentally retarded, schizophrenic, 55-year-old Portland woman. You live on your own but need assistance with daily tasks such as shopping and taking medication. You stand less than five feet tall and are obese. As a way of expressing yourself, you wear wigs-- sometimes brightly colored ones.

Now imagine that you're waiting at a bus stop in Northeast Portland when a young man named "Scooter" approaches you with a microphone.

"How much do you weigh?" asks Scooter, who doesn't tell you his real name but is one of the regular hosts for the morning Playhouse at Jammin 95.5, Portland's fourth-most popular radio station (see "Pulp Radio," WW, Dec. 4, 2002). "How tall are you?"

You are flustered. You're on your way to the Rainbow Adult Living Center and don't want to talk. But Scooter insists. He asks you over and over whether you are "going to Kmart to buy new underwear." (It's a reference to the autistic character played by Dustin Hoffman in the movie Rain Man, but you don't make the connection.)

Your bus comes and you think that your ordeal is over. But then on Feb. 19, you're listening to your beloved radio when, at 7:25 am, Scooter's on the air, bragging that he has found the "ugliest, fattest lady I've ever seen in my life." Then he rolls the tape of his "interview" with you.

You're not the only one who hears the broadcast. So do several of your colleagues at the rehab facility where you work. You tell a counselor that you'll never listen to your radio again.

Advocates rush to your aid. "This radio station has violated standards of human decency that are usually present in this community and has both perpetrated and opened the door for disrespect, discrimination and abuse of people with disabilities," writes Howard Klink, director of Multnomah County Developmental Disabilities Services, in a widely circulated email.

Your response is simpler. "That was a mean thing to do."

Rogue Desk note: Scooter couldn't be reached for comment. Station manager Tim MacNamara is looking into the matter but says he won't tolerate belittling the disabled.

Now their ratings will skyrocket This show goes over the line daily, but happens to be the number one morning show in Portland. hmmmm, maybe something has to be said about the general population of Portland. We are cold hearted bastards that like to listen to people getting belittled on the radio. Paul Allens little world he calls the Northwest is coming together. Thanks to your article more and more listeners like myself can enjoy the radio. —Lendog

Keep up the pressure...Pop this zit on PDX radio I have found "Playhouse" offensive too many times. I can not to listen to these immature individuals for long periods of time. I find it too bad Portland really does not an entertaining morning show to listen to. I find myself bouncing from channel to channel searching for music which is getting harder and harder to find. It is too bad that many younger listeners are not mature enough to know the difference between comedy and belittling. Ha ha very funny mofo..I could not believe they would have aired that. It should have been quite obvious that this lady was not able to defend herself from charater attacks when she repeated the same statement over and over. What would have been wrong with assisting her to her destination or offering to. Can't a good deed be funny or entertaining. Why does it always have to be some stupid lame stunt. I recall a "fake" bank robbery as a skit. Who is the program director there? WW go after him. Scooter is just following directions and is too much of a buffoon to think for himself. This is quite obvious. —Gregory Freemont

I'll believe it when I see it!! The station manager at the radio station is not going to do a damn thing. He knows it. They actually used to be funny, well sometimes, but everything they're doing lately is not really funny at all. To be honest, Ebro was the heart and soul of that team, the only one with brains. It seems as though PK was picked on in school, now he has free reign of the microphone. They need an overhaul definitely. Also, to hear PK talk about his six figure income. He is rarely positive. Is his six figure income worth being the 4th most popular radio station? Scooter, unfortunaly is not too bright and wants to fit it. Of course I'm going by not only what I hear on the radio but what I've seen at concerts or on the streets. They have no level of professionalism. I actually know someone working with the Playhouse on a project right now. From here say they are slackers, and very unorganized. Let's see what Mr. Macnamara has in store. —Elisia Rodriguez

Rogue of the Weak Thanks for taking a stand. I work with the individual who was hurt by Scooter's cruel taunting. Although I spoke with station manager Tim McNamara yesterday and he stated his intention to send a written apology to the victim, and claimed he had suspended Scooter, apparently this morning Scooter was on the air, promoting a Willamatte Week burning party. I'm not sure where or when, but I'd love to attend (ie disrupt) the event. Sounds to me like Mr. McNamara's apology may not be particularly heartfelt. 95.5's Scooter is.... ...a big, dumb, idiot. He needs to belittle some helpless person to make himself feel better. Scooter is dumber then a door knob and needs to get a reality check and a life! —105
