Street Style
Is it in the back of a superstore where the pleats in your pants match the pleats in a lampshade? Is it smack-dab in the middle of 2nd and Burnside, where spit-fired high-school kids pin torn Clash T-shirts to the back of their school bags and black hoodies? Or is it behind the berm, and inside the Lego-looking blocks of buildings that are home to global sportswear giants like Nike and Adidas?
Fact is, it's all of the above and then some.
Now, more than at any other time in this city's history, Portland style is made by and for a disparate group of individuals, free thinkers who live life somewhere on the fringe between mainstream and the far reaches of punk rock. No one person, place or thing determines what is cool, hot or even lukewarm. Group-think is so over.
Locally, that means up-and-coming clothing designers are as likely to get press as mononymic ragtimers like Calvin, Ralph and Donna. And even the big stores are trying to look like indie boutiques. That new reality makes covering the style scene exciting, fresh and (dare we say it?) fun.
To celebrate the new spin in Portland's style step, we offer you the latest looks from spring's colorful crop of clothes for men and women. We also strike gold with a group of talented DIYers whose accessories are hot sellers both in and way outside of Portland. Speaking of treasures, the bons mots shared by members of this city's design community on what makes up Portland style are priceless, as are Rachel Beckman's ability to bring the catwalk to the sidewalk and WW Look columnist Elizabeth Dye's feature on fashions that will make brides hip--and happy.
And speaking of happiness, nowadays isn't that something worth shooting for?
