Headout Picks 4/10/13

WEDNESDAY APRIL 10

CIRCA
[DANCE] Not quite the Ringling Brothers and not quite Cirque du Soleil, Australian company Circa combines contemporary dance with circus acrobatics. Seven tight-bodied performers balance on one another, sail through the air and tumble across stage. There’s a fanciful hula-hoop routine and a contortionist who appears to dislocate his rib cage, but Circa is more highbrow than a big-top show. Newmark Theatre, 1111 SW Broadway, 245-1600. 7:30 pm. $22-$64.
GHOSTFACE KILLAH WITH ADRIAN YOUNGE’S VENICE DAWN
[MUSIC] It’s a match that should make any hip-hop head salivate: Wu-Tang Clan’s preeminent lyricist, backed by the psych-soul wunderkind behind the Black Dynamite soundtrack. Mississippi Studios, 3939 N Mississippi Ave., 288-3895. Midnight. $30. 21+.

THURSDAY APRIL 11

GASTRONOMICAL TRIVIA
[TRIVIA] Finally your innate ability to identify 1980s candy flavors gets some recognition. Test your taste buds with Pix’s edible trivia night. Categories include beer, retro candy, charcuterie and cold-cereal milk. Pre-registration of one-to-four-person teams required, 971-271-7166. Pix Patisserie, 3402 SE Division St., 232-4407. 7-9 pm. $6. 21+.

FRIDAY APRIL 12

CLYBOURNE PARK
[THEATER] Portland audiences got a taste of Bruce Norris’ particular brand of prickliness with Third Rail’s The Pain and the Itch last year, and now Portland Center Stage presents his 2011 Pulitzer-winning drama. The play, set in the same neighborhood as Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, jabs at issues of racism and gentrification. Gerding Theater, 128 NW 11th Ave., 445-3700. 7:30 pm. $39-$65.

SATURDAY APRIL 13

WHISKEY 101
[BOOZE] Learn the nuances of whiskey versus whisky at this sipping lecture. It covers Scotch and Irish varieties, bourbon, rye and Portland distilleries. Strong drink and light food included. With a guide named Andrew Finkelman, you can’t go wrong. The Old Gold, 2105 N Killingsworth St., 894-8937.
1 pm. $30. 21+.

TUESDAY APRIL 16

A TRIBE CALLED RED
[MUSIC] The three Ottawa-based producers, who all hail from Canadian First Nations, mash up the drumming and whooping sounds of a traditional powwow with the drumming and whooping sounds of a modern club to create a strikingly original hybrid style they call “powwow step.” Holocene, 101 SE Morrison St., 239-7639. 8 pm. $10 advance, $12 day of show. 21+.
