GEMINI LOUNGE

THURSDAY SEPT. 19

TBA: BODY/HEAD
[MUSIC] The swift, sudden implosion of Sonic Youth left a nation of indie-rock die-hards disillusioned, but the once coolly aloof Kim Gordon has finally emerged from the scarecrow-shaped shadow of her ex-husband. Coming Apart, her double album of “scripted improv” with noise guitarist Bill Nace, is challenging, harrowing and ultimately rewarding. The Works at Con-Way, 2170 NW Raleigh St. 10:30 pm. $15-$20. 21+.

FRIDAY SEPT. 20

FEAST COOKBOOK SOCIAL
[BOOKS] Events for the Feast food festival are both very expensive and mostly sold out. Your best option is the Cookbook Social, which brings many of the fest’s brightest minds (Gabe Rucker, John Holl, Karen Brooks, Allen Salkin) together to hobnob and sign books. See story on page 45. Heathman Hotel, 1001 SW Broadway, feastportland.com. 2-4 pm. $5 suggested donation.
FIDDLER ON THE ROOF
[THEATER] Once again, Portland Center Stage opens its season with a big musical. Does director Chris Coleman have another political allegory up his sleeve for this tale of a poor Jewish milkman in pre-revolutionary Russia? Gerding Theater, 128 NW 11th Ave., 445-3700. 7:30 pm. $38-$72.
TODD BARRY
[COMEDY] Barry, a veteran standup with a soft delivery, can read loan documents and make them sound hilarious. For this tour, he doesn’t even have an act: He’s working off crowd interaction alone. Mississippi Studios, 3939 N Mississippi Ave., 288-3895. 8 pm. $20. 21+.

SUNDAY SEPT. 22

TBA: ONE WITH OTHERS
[DANCE] Karen Sherman uses pieces of scrap lumber as props to create a makeshift language, attempting to examine who we are as a result of our consequences. Despite that dubious intention, the piece is essentially a mockery of art pieces that claim transformative powers. Sherman even announces as much in the beginning via a voice recording: “If you are expecting me to change your life, forget about it.” BodyVox Dance Center, 1201 NW 17th Ave., 229-0627. 4:30 pm. $15-$20.

MONDAY SEPT. 23

BEN GOLDBERG QUINTET FEATURING NELS CLINE

[POLYPHONIC JAZZ] The Bay Area-based clarinet master teams with the ever-adventurous Wilco guitar wizard for a project ingeniously intertwining Ornette Coleman-style polyphonic lines with plaintive, songlike melodies. Mississippi Studios, 3939 N Mississippi Ave.,  288-3895. 8 pm. $12 advance, $15 day of show. 21+.
