Letting Underdogs Lie

In a bit of spin worthy of the White House, Portland Center Stage's artistic director, Chris Coleman, explains in the latest issue of American Theatre magazine why the theater will not be staging a production of the critically acclaimed Broadway play Topdog/Underdog this season. According to Coleman, he personally decided not to do Suzan-Lori Parks' Pulitzer Prize winner (even though it was tentatively listed in early press releases) so that his company could produce a new play instead--a bold act.

However, insiders say the real story is slightly different. Apparently crosstown rival Artists Repertory Theatre had a hold on the rights from the Samuel French company before Coleman put in a bid, and will be premiering the play this fall.
