Hot Plates 8/13/14

1. Grant’s Philly Cheesesteaks (pictured above)

1203 NW 23rd Ave., 477-7133.

Portland's best cheesesteak comes from the wilds of Northeast 154th and Sandy to tony Northwest 23rd. You want the original ($6.75 for a half), with provolone, onions, hot peppers, sweet peppers and—this is key, if unorthodox—grilled mushrooms. (Full review)

2. Pizza Maria

3060 SE Division St., 971-303-7000, pizzamariapdx.com.

Division Street now has pizza on almost every block. Maria's delightfully simple marinara pie is the best, with leopard-spotted crust, bright sauce, thin-sliced garlic and a sprinkle of oregano. (Full review.)

3. Taqueria Portland

820 SE 8th Ave., 232-7000.

Sick of driving to St. Johns for Tienda Santa Cruz tacos? Try this delightful little taqueria, which closed its NoPo shop and moved earlier this year to Belmont Street, next to Growler Guys.

4. Local Ocean

213 SE Bay Blvd, Newport, 541-574-7959, localocean.net.

This casually excellent Newport seafood restaurant sits only a few feet from the docks. Try the bacon-wrapped tuna mignon.

5. C'est Si Bon! Crepes + Vins

22 NE 7th Ave., 703-9378, cestsibonpdx.com.

The crepes immediately jockey with the best in town. (Full review.)
