With Portland's public schools in a near-permanent state of crisis, the Rogue desk is often lectured about substandard facilities, outdated textbooks and inadequate budgeting. But the kids at Benson High have a more fundamental obstacle on their path toward higher learning: a metal gate.

This road to roguery leads through a massive office complex at 1201 NE Lloyd Blvd. When developers 1201 Lloyd Associates LLC originally approached the City of Portland about their plans, they acknowledged a basic law of physics. The shortest distance between a high-school student and his classroom is a straight line, even if that line goes through private property. So the developer agreed to keep a pedestrian path linking Northeast Holladay Street to Lloyd Boulevard open to the public during daylight hours.

So it came as a surprise a few years back when Lloyd Associates built a massive locking iron gate blocking off the most popular pathway to the school.

Attorneys for the developers say the fence was needed to keep Benson High kids from vandalizing the building.

Benson student-body president Nate Anderson, however, denies that students trashed the building and says kids who attempt to cut through the courtyard are now harassed by security guards. He insists the path is the safest way for students to get to and from the MAX stop on Holladay Street, as it keeps them away from the office building's frenzied parking garage.

Nonetheless, the developers' attorneys maintain that their original permit had a termination clause that allowed them to fence off their property. Although a judge recently agreed with that logic, the City of Portland is appealing, saying even if the developers have found a legal loophole, they are violating the intent of the original agreement.

BENSON HIGH KIDSI WORK IN THE BUILDING THAT IS THE FOCUS OF THIS ARTICLE AND I AGREE WITH THE SECURITY GUARDS. THESE KIDS ARE DISRESPECTFUL, DO NOT OBEY TRAFFIC SIGNALS, DO NOT OBEY CROSS WALK SIGNALS, THEY CROSS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION, STAND IN THE DRIVEWAY TO OUR BUILDING, WHEN YOU ASK THEM TO MOVE, THEY DO NOT. IF THEY WERE ABLE TO CROSS WHERE THAT GATE IS, THERE WOULD BE ALOT OF LITTERING, TRAMPLED LANDSCAPING AND THE AREA WOULD BE IN DISARRAY IN A MATTER OF DAYS. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THEM GOING AROUND THE BUILDING AND USING THE CROSSWALKS PROPERLY. WE HAVE CALLED BENSON SEVERAL TIMES ABOUT THE CROSS WALKS AND THERE IS NOTHING DONE ABOUT IT. SO WHAT IF THEY HAVE TO WALK A LITTLE FARTHER, SO, WHAT IF THEY HAVE TO GO AROUND THE BUILDING...WE HAVE TO GO AROUND THEM WHEN WE WANT TO ENTER OUR PARKING GARAGE AND HAVE TO WAIT FOR THEM TO GET OUT OF THE STREET THEY ARE ILLEGALLY STANDING IN. NOT ONLY IS THIS ILLEGAL, BUT, IT IS ALSO A SAFETY ISSUE FOR THEM TO BE STANDING IN THE STREET...SO WHAT...BOOHOO! DEAL WITH IT...LIFE ISN'T PERFECT AND THESE SPOILED LAZY BRATS WILL FIND THAT OUT WHEN THEY BECOME "ADULTS"!—CHELE

Benson High student MAX exodus.I work in the 1201 Lloyd building. Frequently my coworkers and I are swarmed as we attempt to enter the parking garage by mass quantities of students crossing the street in total disregard of the traffic signals and flow of automobile traffic. I do not blame the developers for blocking the way of these irresponsible kids. It's worrisome that these are future citizens and drivers who could care less about what is going on around them.—B Brown

1201 Lloyd Building AccessTo whom it may concern. I think your article is extremely one sided. Have you talked to anyone who works in the Lloyd building to see what they have gone through with these high school kids? Several of my co-workers have had their cars hit as they try to go when their light is green and the kids keep crossing even with a no walk sign. When kids have come through the building they are loud & rude, cursing etc. that is not good for any business. When we moved to this building in July we were told this was a secure building, which made the transaction a little easier to handle. Have you ever really seen the mass of kids that pour through the intersection when school lets out? Imagine what that would be like for the tenants of the Lloyd building if they did not have the fence up. We would constantly be getting harassed for money; cigarettes etc as if we were standing at the MAX station when all we want to do in the courtyard is take a needed break from the day. It is the responsibility of my employer to make sure I work in a safe environment and that is what they are doing. —Concerned

1201 Lloyd Associates LLCI found your article interesting to say the least. I'm a relatively new tenant within the building described about. Since moving into the building, I personally have had to phone the school numerous times asking the officials to communicate with the students about the importance of obeying traffic signals. Although not the subject of your article, it appears that the student body president doesn't know or hasn't observed other students and what they're capable of. Serveral times, while making a right turn into the parking garage, groups of students have refused to stand on the sidewalk and have blocked access to the driveway into the garage. They've also ignored pedestrian signs and have walked across the direct path of on-coming traffic and then feel the need to yell obscenities at the people driving. Apparently they feel that they have the right to disobey common traffic laws. From my experiences, I can understand the need for tighter security throughout the property since there's a blatant disregard by the students in following such simple rules as "walk" and "don't walk". Maybe walking around the building will give them time to think about it.—Kim

I disagreeI disagree with the article. Why should the students of this school need to walk through the property of the 1201 office building? The students of this school in my opinion have not dispalyed any curtiousness around the school property or on the 1201 property. In many instances I have seen the students of this school attempt to run through the lobby of the 1201 office building, screaming and cussing obscenities. (I suppose just to get away with it?)As well as fights in the middle of the street as well as jumping out in front of moving cars...making them slam on their brakes. As well as not paying attention to any traffic signals or cross walks. The Portland Police have been out to the intersections on multiple occasions to try to rectify the situation and the students did not take them seriously until they actually started stopping kids and writing jay walking tickets. In the mornings, you can sit at 2 - 3 green lights waiting for the students to obey the crosswalk signals...but they never do. I have almost ran into students not paying attention. Not to mention the behavior I have seen at and around Llyod Center Mall. To say the least, the students dont need to take "shortcuts" through life, especially through a professional business building where frankly business professionals dont want to be bothered with the chaos and lack of common sense some of the students have? Seriously here, is it really about saving 1 minute to walk through the "iron gates" instead of walking around the building? By the way, I have seen the way the security guards handle the situations when students are approaching the building and to say the least, if you were the security guard and 5 students came up to the doors hollaring and cussing up a storm, would you let them into your professional office building and interupt the people trying to take a 15 minute break, or clients that are entering the building not feeling safe to approach the front doors? Anyway...thats all!! —Jason
