Berbati's Turns to Rental Space

Berbati's Pan underwent a seismic shift yesterday when owner Ted Papaioannou decided to eliminate the booking and promoting arm of the venerable downtown club, essentially turning the 500-capacity club into a rental space for the first time in its 13-year history.

"We had to do some changes," Papaioannou told Willamette Week today. "Too much funds were being taken from the bar and restaurant and being put into the music venue."

In an attempt to stop the loss, Papaioannou laid off Chantelle Hylton, the Portland scene fixture who has been booking the club and overseeing show promotion for the last two and a half years. Now, Papaioannou says, shows at the club will be put on by outside entities like Thrasher Presents and Monqui Presents.

"I've known for a while that they haven't been rolling in the dough," says Hylton, who claims that in the past few months the club has been averaging an attendance of about 200 per show, an improvement over past numbers. "I know that running a club is a difficult business and I think that everyone who works there expected that this would happen at some point. But I'm surprised that it happened this way; I'm surprised that they didn't include me more."

Papaioannou claims any rumors that the club is closing or changing hands are uninformed, saying the club will remain a part of the Berbati's establishment for the foreseeable future. He also says the rental status of the space might be temporary.

"We will see how things go for the next few weeks," Papaioannou says.

As for the shows currently on Berbati's calendar, Hylton says not all dates are secure but she is doing her best to assure they remain at the club, many under her production company title, "Blackbird Presents." Soon, though, more of Hylton's energies will be focused on the Towne Lounge, the small westside club she has also been booking for the past year.

"I'm moving everything I care about over to the Towne Lounge," Hylton says. "The more experimental shows and the regular shows that didn't quite feel like they belonged at Berbati's, like Housewarming, the Church of Psychedelia and Cosmic Skronk. The Towne Lounge is a perfect place for me to do the things I love in a less big-business atmosphere."

Berbati's Turns to Rental Spacethis is just... well i hope the hell it is still going to have cool shows, like william topley, and all the others i used to see before i moved, or it will be just another loss to the portland scene. berbati's was one of my stops when i had a night off or we got done early at kelly's olympian, i worked there as the doorman-bouncer before mr. power's retired and sold the joint. we, the whole kelly's crew used to hit rialto's, the greek, berbati's and shanghai's b4 we ended up at some underground after hour's on the eastside. i hope that they are able to get the eclectic talent that i remember from back then. also they had a righteous door guy, he became one of the coolest friends i have ever had, lucas, he eventually left for boston, became a boston police officer, then i left a few years later to become a firefighter. everytime i read, more keeps changing, but i still have the times before the changes i guess. engine5company@hotmail.com—Engineer FF/EMT Robert Christian w/ Engine Company 5-Pleasure Ridge Park Fire Dept. Berbati's Turns to Rental SpaceAs an employee of Berbati's, I feel it necessary to state that the information contained in this article seems misrepresentative. This establishment has had numerous booking agents throughout the years, and changing staff in this industry is an important part of staying competative. With a capacity triple the aforementioned count of 200 people per show, it isn't an efficient use of space to have such low attendance. Furthermore, I can state firsthand that a 200 plus attendance has been a pretty rare thing. More often than not our shows have had attendance levels of less than a hundred, which puts a huge financial strain on the company as well as the staff. Putting more faith and effort in rental companies such as Thrasher guarantee a much better service to our customers as well as ensuring that employees can earn a decent living. This does not mean that Berbati's (a family owned company, might I add) is in any way "Big Business".So to our valued patrons- please don't worry! We plan to continue providing a great venue with fantastic shows well into the future!

Berbati's Turns to Rental SpaceWell Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit. Chantelle does a lot for this town with booking. Best of luck to her. By the way, a cool booking tool for bands is based here locally... www.bandcommand.com. Looks like Berbati's will need updating.—Randall Scott

Berbati's Turns to Rental SpaceMy first and last experience with Berbati's was being attracted there to hear a pop musical/ satire show called "Those Darned Accordions" - an instrument and genre for which I have much appreciation. However, opening for the accordions, was an ear splitting rock band that threatened what little remained of my hearing after years of enduring loud factories, shops and other auditory assaults. After five minutes of this I requested the return of my cover charge and fled -- never to return to Barbatis or any other club or venue I didn't know and trust. Those promoting music in this town,(cf. the article about Doug Fir club), should understand their potential audiences and be careful how they mix and match their acts. All the geezers are not at the Opera or home with Lawrence Welk reruns. But we don't want to be lured into trying something new and find ourselves being tortured and punished for venturing out.—Monty
