Red & Black >> Le Pigeon >> Blueplate

Rent is going up all over the city, and for the veggie-centric Red and Black Cafe (see story, page 72), it's about to double. According to employees at the worker-run collective, the building's new owner, North Rim Development, informed them of the hefty increase this spring. The collective will likely move, but wants to stay in the 'hood. North Rim was not available for comment before press time. >> Bittersweet news: Le Pigeon's stellar brunch is flying south, well, forever. The East Burnside destination (738 E Burnside St., 546-8796) is ditching brunch effective immediately. The bright side? The bird's open for dinner seven nights a week from now on. >> More delish dinner news: Downtown lunch counter Blueplate (again, see story, page 72) will open for lunch and supper Tuesday-Friday. Hooray! The catch? It's only serving until 8:30 pm. Boo.

I think there is more to the story with Red and Black Cafe than doubling the rent and blaming corporate domination. It may even be an epidemic in PDX: "To hip for their own good" would be the headline for that story. For 10 years as a neighbor to the R&B I have kept the faith that their blantant pretentiousness, indifference, irreverance and nepotism would soften, just a little, and I could take family and friends their without the risk of embarrasment. But alas, for 10 years...nothing. Karma works in stange ways. Well, good luck to these self-proclaimed radicals. And they have the gaul to ask for donations, ha! Right! After 7 years (3 years I had known them as Flying Saucer), they've shunned just about everyone who doesn't meet their I'm-so-hip vibe. So long R&B! As a word of advice to the many "getting too hip for their own good" cafes and eateries springing up all over PDX, be a little courteous, just a little, and PDX will treat you right and you might just stay in business. BTW even double the rent at R&B's location would be a steal and quite managable for any coffee house that served an ounce of customer service with 8 ounces of java.
