Winners

1 U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Ore.) need not spend the eye-popping $4 million he’s squirreled away on research against his opponent-to-be. Thanks to the eat-your-own climate of the blogosphere, plenty of warts for Senate D hopefuls Jeff Merkley and Steve Novick are available at blueoregon.com/2007/10/smearing-jeff-m.html. With friends like these....

p>2 The Multnomah Athletic Club got a little more exclusive after the Oregon Court of Appeals upheld fallen financier Andy Wiederhorn’s expulsion. The MAC booted Wiederhorn after a felony conviction; he challenged the decision, claiming the club included plenty of other felons. Where else are white-collar criminals supposed to buff up for the pen?

3Gay-rights advocates celebrate for a second week. Days after falling short of enough signatures to get a reversal of a new domestic partnership law on the ballot, gay-rights opponents also failed to collect enough signatures to refer a new anti-discrimination law to voters. The moral? There aren’t enough gay-bashers left who know how to write their names.

Losers

1 The state asked Multnomah County Sheriff Bernie Giusto to give up his badge or face allegations he’s told a laundry list of lies. The real loser if the G-Man’s bumbling reign ends? Cops reporters without a steady stream of sheriff screw-ups to chronicle.

2Conspiracy theorists predicted the TOPOFF 4 Homeland Security drill will “go live” this week, leaving Portland either under martial law or a pile of radioactive rubble. If you’re reading this, it didn’t happen. But we hear Y2K is coming back. (Check WWire at wweek.com daily through Friday, Oct. 19, for your TOPOFF coverage.)

3 Another local corporate headquarters bites the dust. Tektronix , the company widely credited with pioneering Oregon’s Silicon Forest and for birthing numerous other local high-tech firms, will become a subsidiary of Washington, D.C.-based Danaher Corp.

4 LumberJax , we hardly knew ye Two years after the pro lacrosse team came to town, word came Tuesday that the entire National Lacrosse League was shutting down for the 2008 season because of a labor dispute. (Go to wweek.com for more.)

Bye Bye Bernie.

Gonna be a little tougher for you to score without the badge.

WW always finds lots of inspiring NW news to report. Next time, can you do a piece on how to tie a noose so I can hang myself?

RE: 2. conspiracy theorists predicted the TOPOFF 4 Homeland Security drill will “go live” this week - Not true. Many, who have rejected the "official conspiracy theory," have also researched the infamous day of 2-dozen drills through which were conduited the most horrific false flag provocation of all time. We are determined to promote awareness of this fact and the modus operandi of the rogue state in its penchant for this. The goal is simply to raise awareness to the point that they dare not try it again. To put them on notice that the alert precedes their potential intent. That if one of their rogue operatives slips in and small changes a drill into real terrorism, the alert has already been sounded: "Do not look to a cave in the Hindu Kush for the author of the terror. Look to the cave beneath the Naval Observatory."

Hey, young cops reporters, you don't have to remain losers! We appreciate that deciding to uncover accurate information ----- from reliable sources not controlled by reckless political players taking advantage of you ----- is difficult. For a steady stream of real screw-ups, we have discovered that the deliberate screw-ups are not from the Sheriff at all. Behind a far-reaching disinformation campaign ----- enabled by a highly-paid PR firm among the "cronies" ----- the Sheriff has been the solid individual with the evident decency to serve the public good. He is among those who stand up to the well-hidden, true "screw-ups". Fans of independent papers care that you stop unintentionally misleading voters with sensationalized cheap shots. We believe that you don't have to play into the calculating hands of greedy con artists abusing their power in corrupt systems --- which desperately need improvements. You are winners when you create authentic moral power. We applaud when you hold up well-lit mirrors. Aggressive scapegoating directed by self-serving accusers undermines us all. That can be recognized with your conscientious efforts. So, I understand that I'm suggesting that we all please work harder: so we can provoke more genuine substance! I would prefer not taking all this valuable time to try my best here, either. How else can we create more beneficial communication, that is much more interesting? I believe positive, good-natured, constructive public discourse is much more entertaining than the mean-girl variety. Grateful independent thinkers who care about contributing to our community's health and well-being will celebrate your higher standards. Thank you! (See you all: Naomi Klein event, Friday evening, at First U.)
