The döner kebab, a gyrolike Turkish sandwich known as Europe’s undisputed late-night drunk food, has finally come to Portland—much to the delight of downtown guzzlers, former exchange students and WW display sales assistant Dan Winters (really, he’s obsessed with the damn thing). Augsburg, Germany, native Johan Arkosi’s version at Döner Kebab and German Cuisine (515 SW 4th Ave., 295-4929)—döner is traditionally made with lamb—is a mountain of moist, thin-sliced turkey, roasted for hours on a vertical rotisserie and jumbled up with crunchy cabbage, lettuce, tomato, red onion and spicy yogurt sauce, all tucked inside a chewy pocket of sesame-seed bread. It’s the best thing you’ll stuff in your mouth this year for $6.99, no contest.
