THERE’S MORE TO MIC CRENSHAW

As one of Mic Crenshaw’s so-called “known associates” (“Off the Mic,” WW, Nov. 19, 2008), I have travelled around the country and performed with him for the past seven years. I have had the pleasure of getting to know him and have witnessed his interactions with fans and friends. Mic Crenshaw is a compassionate, kind-hearted person, who surrounds himself with others who are similarly caring and good-natured.

Mr. Pitkin’s story was an irresponsible, gross misrepresentation of Mic’s character. He focused on Crenshaw as the stereotypical thug rapper, which was immediately evident from the shirtless, tattoo-filled photograph chosen by WW. In doing so, Pitkin overlooked the great humanitarian achievements of Mic Crenshaw, including his work with children in the community and raising money to ship computers to Burundi and to Jordan for Iraqi refugees. These facts are much more relevant than a 2001 completely unrelated, non-violent charge, which was dismissed from his record.

This story also distorted some significant details. First, this was NOT a fight. Mic Crenshaw was jumped by two bouncers and violently beaten for no good reason. Mic Crenshaw is the victim here, but somehow Arjun Dey escaped criticism and prosecution. Mr. Dey was fired for his actions, but his background was not checked, and the fact that he was responsible for at least four other similar incidents went undetected.

I urge Mr. Pitkin and Mark Zusman to strongly consider publishing a follow-up story which is more reflective of Mic Crenshaw’s character. Kind Regards,

Erik Abel

IT’S NOT HEAVEN, IT’S EFFIN’ IOWA

Irma Valdez brings up an important point (see “Meltdown Lowdown,” WW, Nov. 19, 2008), and echoes a belief that I have earned the right to hold: The name of the state of Iowa should be preceded by the modifier “fuckin’.” It is a term of endearment and affection, and can be accompanied by a sad shake of the head.

Iowa is a five-syllable word, a state of no-mind, and a really cool place to see in your rearview mirror. Things are different here in Oregon, but the Iowa of my memory is fuckin’ eerie. Love it and leave it.

I second Erik Abel's call for a follow up on the Mic Crenshaw story, I too have known Mic for several years and have never seen the man behave in a violent or aggressive way. You owe it to Mic as well as WW readers to follow up on this story and find out the real details, while your at it I am sure you will discover that Crenshaw is an important artistic and activist asset to this community.
