Portland Police Chief Mike Reese
released a statement this afternoon on yesterday's brief announcement by his bureau that it would re-open the investigation into sexual assault charges made by a masseuse against former Vice President Al Gore
(PDF) is mostly a re-visit of the timeline about the first contact Gore's accuser had with police a couple months after she says Gore tried to sexually assault her Oct. 24, 2006 in a ninth-floor suite at the Hotel Lucia during a massage.
Reese does say nobody forced the bureau to re-open the investigation. And the chief reiterated that the bureau made procedural errors
in how it handled the investigation when the woman returned to give police her statement in 2009.
"There should have been command level review at the time on specifics of this case and decisions on whether the investigation should go forward," says Reese, who became police chief in May 2010.
Gore, through a spokeswoman, has denied the accusations made by Molly Hagerty.
