Facebook Fans Urge PPS to "Save Portland PE!"

Save Portland PE!
Pressure is building at Portland Public Schools following Superintendent Carole Smith's announcement last week that the school district might eliminate wholesale programs like physical education or art, music and other electives at elementary, middle and K-8 schools.

The superintendent proposed those cuts to help fill the district's $19 million budget hole for next year.

And now, a new Facebook group called Save Portland PE urges parents and community members to call Smith and the seven members of the Portland School Board to voice their objections to the proposal before tomorrow's 6:30 pm budget hearing, when the board plans to consider the cuts. The Facebook group has 149 fans. Supporters plan a full-page ad in tomorrow's Oregonian. They also have radio ads decrying the proposed change and have released a poll reporting that Portlanders don't want PE to disappear.
