Symphony season holds a few surprises

The Oregon Symphony has announced its 2007-08 season. Don't yawn just yet.

Though the 2007-08 programming is heavy on symphonic repertoire staples by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff, there are some interesting surprises, a few curiosities and one choral-orchestral masterwork on the calendar.

Among the notables:

*Laureate Music Director James DePreist returns with violinist Nadja-Salerno-Sonnenberg for the Bruch Violin Concerto and Rachmaninoff Symphony no. 2

*Repertoire curiosities like Edward Elgar's In The South, Samuel Barber's Souvenirs and Martinu's The Frescoes of Piero della Francesca

*A complete performance, in collaboration with Portland Symphonic Choir and Pacific Youth Choir with vocal soloists as yet-to-be-announced, of Carl Orff's dramatic meta-cantata

In what will be his fifth season on the podium, Carlos Kalmar leads most of the Symphony's 14 classical programs on the docket, which represents a nearly 20 percent decline in classical programming from the current 2006-07 season, which had 17 classical programs.
