Online Hiking Wiki Resource Debuts

The dedicated folks at PortlandHikers.com today rolled out Portland's—and possibly the world's—first hiking wiki, the Portland Hikers Field Guide.

Dozens of hikes are arranged by difficulty, type and environment (lakes, waterfalls, great views, alpine, etc.). The idea is to build one online resource, created and maintained by hikers, where you can find out what a hike is like, what it offers, what the latest conditions are, how long it is, and what it looks like. Many of the descriptions even have maps.

"This is a place for the outdoor community to collaborate and assemble their knowledge about great hikes and destinations in Oregon and Southwest Washington," says the main website, which has been around since June 2006. There's no charge to use the site or read the wiki.

Oh, and the flowers in the Columbia Gorge should be coming out in about a month. For some Field Guide recommendations on Gorge hikes, click here. Or if you just can't wait, check out the list of all-season hikes.
