Private Plane Usage: Dudley Soars Above Kitzhaber So Far

Chris Dudley

Yesterday, a Rasmussen poll showed Oregon gubernatorial candidates John Kitzhaber, a Democrat (below), and Republican Chris Dudley pretty even (above) as the race begins for the November general election. Kitzhaber supporters groused that Rasmussen polls favor Republicans, and Dudley defenders say the poll is legit.

But here's something that's not debatable:

In the primary that ended last week, Dudley—a former Portland Trail Blazer who played 16 NBA seasons and racked up many hours on flights—got the jump on Kitzhaber when it came to borrowing private planes.

Filings show that Dudley disclosed $32,900 in in-kind contributions for airplane use. He tapped supporters including former Louisiana-Pacific CEO Harry Merlo ($17,618), M Financial exec Steve Shepard ($10,362), and construction executive Kelly Bruun $(4,920) for trips. Kitzhaber reported $10,362 in in-kind contributions for flights, all of it from John Helm, who is the husband of State Sen. Betsy Johnson (D-Scappoose).
