Put down the Pens

With the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins making noise about possibly leaving their hometown, Portland's hockey diehards might sense a break in their quest for a local team.

But Drew Mahalic of the Oregon Sports Authority says Portland is "not on the verge of being proactive." In other words, hopes are not high.

The Pens are probably just working for a new arena, anyway. "We think that things really need to settle down there in terms of what they really want to do," Mahalic says. "If it should get to a point where they are adamant about leaving, then in an appropriate manner we would look at contacting them."

Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Kansas City appears to be heading the list of team suitors.
