Live Review: To the Circus (Artemis)!

622_Oct162009_5465 “Pop Goes the Weasel” thumps before the Madame of Ceremonies comes out of a red box to introduce performers. She tells jokes like “What is big and grey and doesn't matter?! An Irrelevant!” and dons an airplane costume--all for your entertainment, and I think it would be entertaining if I were not over the age of 10. Performers juggle cushy balls, and toss neon colored inner tubes that look like giant Life Savers. If this all sounds excellent, you will love Circus Artemis, the all-female Portland based circus. Even if it doesn't, you might still enjoy yourself--the contortionists and aerial performers are fantastic.

These ladies can spray a bottle and nail a target with a bow and arrow while upside down, all by the strength and dexterity of their feet. Strongwoman Tera Nova Zarra rips through a phone book with her hands as a man from the audience struggles to tear his smaller one, and Brittney Walsh demonstrates the many ways one can do a splits as she bends with the ease of a Twizzler.

Staver Locomotive, 2537 NW 29th Ave., circusartemis.org. 8 pm Friday, 2 and 8 pm Saturday, 2 and 7 pm Sunday. $15-$20, kids $12 and under pay their age.
