Speaking to a crowd of about 50 protesters outside City Hall demanding safe and affordable housing, city Commissioner
Amanda Fritz said this afternoon there simply wasn't enough money in the budget to do everything the demonstrators want.
"The sad fact is, there isn't any money," Fritz said in response to protesters' call to restore money for the city's neighborhood inspections program and for affordable housing programs.
The rally was organized by
Community Alliance of Tenants,
Street Roots, and
Sisters of the Road.
Protesters chanted, "House, heat and food to eat. That keeps people off the street." And they carried signs one of which said, "Homeland security starts with homes."
