Saltzman Puts Chasse Cop on Desk Duty after Road Rage Case

Saltzman 2

Police Commissioner Dan Saltzman tells WW he and Chief Rosie Sizer decided today to take Sgt. Kyle Nice off the street following a recent off-duty road-rage incident in Washington County.

Nice — one of the cops involved in the 2006 death of James Chasse Jr. in police custody — is currently on paid leave pending an internal Portland police investigation of the road-rage incident. The Washington County Sheriff's Office declined to press charges after Nice pulled a gun on another driver.

When Nice returns to duty after the investigation is complete, Saltzman says he'll be assigned to desk duty — likely in the police bureau's office of emergency management.

The decision came after nearly a week of consultation between Saltzman and Sizer. Saltzman was quiet on the reasons behind the decision — the city is now facing a $145,000 lawsuit by the other driver.

"In consultation with the chief, we just felt that was the appropriate step to take," Saltzman says.
