Tyler Perry returns to movie theaters the same Easter weekend as another Christian moneymaker, Nicholas Sparks. It's not exactly a miracle. But it does allow for comparison. Sparks' The Last Song offers pretty pictures and easy tears, while Perry's film, cheap as it looks, earnestly wants to talk about stuff. Perry produces black middle-class soap operas, and this one starts with a choral overture: Four couples take their annual group vacation, with the women sharing suspicions about their husbands, and vice versa. Michael Jai White is amusing as a henpecked sportscaster and Janet Jackson eerily serene as a pop psychologist, until she takes a golf club to the furniture. No pop music montage here. Perry writes mediocre theater and films it with little imagination. The mood is pleasant and the sets are tacky…until Janet Jackson takes a golf club to the furniture. A sequel to the first Why Did I Get Married?, Perry's soap manages to clean without irritating. This routine workout of male and female egos is refreshing only because American filmmakers don't usually bother. PG-13.
