On the Record: The Sad Life of Jackie Collins, the Man Shot at Hoyt Arboretum

Jackie Dale Collins

Portland police this morning identified the man shot Monday afternoon in Hoyt Arboretum as 58-year-old Jack Dale Collins. He also used the first name of Jackie.

A search of the state court database reveals a snapshot of a man who appears to have been caught in a long cycle of alcoholism and homelessness.

Collins' first arrest in Oregon appears to have been in 1993, when he was charged with misdemeanor criminal trespassing. It's the only criminal charge that appears on his record, and prosecutors later dismissed the case.

Already at that time, Collins' address is listed simply as "unknown."

After that comes a string of six convictions through the years for drinking in public. The first was in 1997, and he was last arrested in 2008.

His address for those arrests is listed variously as "general delivery," "transient," and 111 W. Burnside St. — site of the Portland Rescue Mission.
