During our endorsement interview last week with Oregon's
gubernatorial candidates, we asked this question: Is there a governor who you think is a example of the leader you would like to be?
Republican Chris Dudley
drew straight from his party's playbook, naming a fellow Republican who is widely expected to run for president—Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels.
Democrat John Kitzhaber
was far more surprising. At first, he couldn't think of anyone he admired enough to emulate. Then, he surprised us by picking—with a caveat or two—Chris Christie, the anti-abortion Republican governor of New Jersey. Christie is perhaps best known for taking on the teachers' union and, most recently, canceling
a huge transit project. (Christie's transit announcement came after our Oct. 5 interview.)
