A large mass of rhyming activists will gather on
Portland's South Park Blocks this Saturday to chant, "Money for Jobs and Education, not Occupation."
According to the flier promoting the Oct. 9 demonstration, organizers demand a halt to occupations in
Afganistan and
Iraq, more tolerance for Muslims and immigrants, and an end to "funding Israeli apartheid."
The "Money for Jobs and Education" rally will kick off at 11 am and go on the march at 11:30. The event will close with a teach-in from 1 to 3:30 pm. The rally is being co-hosted by a variety of groups including the Peace Action Committee of the First Unitarian Church, Students United for Palestinian Equal Rights and
KBOO Community Radio.
According to the
US Department of Defense, 1,215 American soldiers have died
in Afganistan. 4,417 have died in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn in Iraq and the surrounding countries.
