Live Review: Three 6 Mafia at the Roseland, Friday, Jan. 30

IMG_0406 - Version 2Three 6 Mafia has a slew of gold and platinum albums. It won the first Oscar of any rap act in history at the Academy Awards. It won the 2008 American Music Award for favorite band, duo or Group for rap/hip-hop music. It has even had a song in a Rocky movie.

Before Friday, however, the group had never been to Portland. Last weekend Three Six Mafia masterminds Juicy J (Jordan Houston) and DJ Paul (Paul Beauregard) fixed that situation for good. Three 6 definitely loomed large as the duo set off the Roseland and shook it down with its crunked-up, hard hitting sounds.

Throughout the show, the Memphis rap powerhouse thronged the stage with a horde of fans. The stage quickly became a gaggle of Portland booty. The ladies were onstage in full force and quickly let everybody know that they were unafraid to shake those things. Amongst the stands, no one seemed at all displeased and "Lolli Lolli (Pop That Body)" did nothing to slow them down.

Along with all of that bouncing backyard were phone-filming paparazzi-types and a whole mess of heads that were psyched to be up and onstage for the ride. They stayed up close to the end and got to be a part of what was overall, a pretty crackin' night in Portland's rap show history.
