Best of the Bulletins: Panther Joins Ratatat Tour, Newspapers Break Up, White Fang Yard Sale, DJ Koolaid in Remix Contest

breaking bulletins
Earlier this week, uncharacteristically, we did a blog round-up. Now comes an ode to MySpace bulletins posted by bands in the past day and the waves their statements are making. Aside from news, show and contest info, we learn that many Portland musicians favor lowercase letters:

ITEM #1: Panther/Ratatat

Panther polaroid First up (or first awake, anyway, as it was posted in the wee hours of the morning) is Panther, who has just joined the Ratatat tour alongside Portland's own electronic king E*Rock (brother to Ratatat's Evan Mast). What did Panther have to say? The duo/trio kept it short and sweet:

Subject: tour with ratatat and e*rock dates up
Body: they are all ages!!!!!!

Ahh... just last Wednesday we were talking to Joe about how the group's September Euro tour was canceled. Looks like Panther won't be sitting on its laurels. Drum roll please! Those not-so-short tour dates are:

Aug 29 2008 8:00P diesel w/RATATAT pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Aug 30 2008 8:00P the gargoyle(wash u) w/RATATAT st louis, Missouri
Aug 31 2008 8:00P granada theatre w/RATATAT lawrence, Kansas
Sep 2 2008 8:00P gothic theatre w/RATATAT englewood, Colorado
Sep 3 2008 8:00P in the venue w/RATATAT salt lake city, Utah
Sep 5 2008 8:00P showbox w/RATATAT seattle, Washington
Sep 8 2008 8:00P fillmore w/RATATAT san francisco, California
Sep 9 2008 8:00P henry fonda theatre w/RATATAT los angeles, California
Sep 10 2008 8:00P henry fonda theatre w/RATATAT los angeles, California
Sep 12 2008 8:00P house of douche w/RATATAT san diego, California
Sep 13 2008 8:00P club congress w/ RATATAT tuscon, Arizona

Sep 20 2008 8:00P calvin college w/ RATATAT grand rapids, Michigan
Sep 22 2008 8:00P turner hall w/ RATATAT millwaukee, Wisconsin
Sep 23 2008 8:00P oberlin college w/ RATATAT oberlin, Ohio
Sep 25 2008 8:00P the masquerade w/ RATATAT atlanta, Georgia
Sep 26 2008 8:00P cats cradle w/ RATATAT carrboro, North Carolina
Sep 27 2008 8:00P terminal 5 w/ RATATAT nyc, New York
Sep 28 2008 8:00P paradise w/ RATATAT boston, Massachusetts
Sep 29 2008 8:00P paradise w/ RATATAT boston, Massachusetts
Oct 1 2008 8:00P starlight ballroom w/ RATATAT philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Oct 2 2008 8:00P black cat w/ RATATAT dc, Washington DC
Oct 3 2008 8:00P club soda w/ RATATAT montreal
Oct 4 2008 8:00P pheonix theatre w/ RATATAT toronto
Oct 5 2008 8:00P sonar w RATATAT baltimore, Maryland

Maybe this tour will conjure up real-time video visuals by E*Rock for all the acts on the bill. Will he write a song about Fred Meyer discontinuing Jones Soda (so lame) during soundcheck at Club Soda in Montreal?

ITEM #2: Newspapers Call it Quits

Yesterday afternoon I overheard a series of phone calls that made it seem as though Newspapers were in peril, especially when the quartet canceled its Top Down show at Hotel Deluxe at the last minute. Now the jangly PDX indie poppers have confirmed its split via a Myspace:

Body: dear friends,

the jig is up for the newspapers.
we are all headed in different directions and our last show will be this saturday 8/23/08 at neverland ranch (3711 se 49th ave)

jake, brian, and andrew will be starting a new project under a new name in the near future.

billy is likely headed back to cleveland, ohio to pursue higher education and root for the browns.

josh continues to live in portland and work at pok pok.

come out this saturday for all the old skool classics.

What's the significance of this Josh (Rivers)? He is the guitarist and backing vocalist whose departure earlier this year made space for Andrew (a non-Ohioan) to join in.

I'm thinking that new band name should actually be "In the Near Future." Petition anyone? I also can't get the echoing chant of "Ohio, Ohio, Ohio" from the Drew Carey Show theme song out of my head.

You can peruse the group's MySpace blogs to bask in the memories of show fliers and archive.

ITEM #3: White Fang Yard Sale

WHT FNG Rollercoaster
LC favorite White Fang posted its bulletin right before last night's show at Holocene alongside Doubledutch and Breakfast Mountain, but it wasn't to promote the show. Instead its about an (obviously) open to the public yard sale and show happening this Saturday at SK8 and Rhone near the Aladdin Theater:

Body: On Saturday we start our fundraising GNARD-SALE.

There will be clothes, records, furniture, etc.

Then at night there will be a show.

Hit it up if you're coming.

New house vibe. Rearranged rooms.

I wonder if any of the occupants' sweet baseball caps, horn-rim glasses or tie-dye shirts will be up for sale. I call dibs on the fold-out couch. Actually, not really.

On any given night sometime drummer Andrew (a.k.a. "the Russian") doles out hair-cuts on the porch, most notably showcased on White Fang guitarist Kyle. If his signature cuts are for sale Saturday, I'm sure they'll make a killing.

ITEM #4: Koolaid Remixes

After a very successful FNDNCPRTY this past Wednesday at Satyricon, DJ Koolaid is scaling even further heights with two entries in a remix contest for the band Ultra Violet:

You can vote by singing into, or creating a Last. fm account, and then add one or both of my mixes to your playlist! This will help me out a lot and i will be very greatful! Hope you can take a mintue and check out these remixes. I have two.

So what does Koolaid stand to get if he wins? According to Ultra Violet's own Myspace:
The TOP 3 remixes will be added to our TrueAnthem Album Widget on our page. The winning 3 remixes will be available for DOWNLOAD and will be sent out to all of our friends and fans! All of the entries will be posted up shortly for everyone to hear and help us pick the winners!
