Andrew Kaffer, "Times Two" from Idle Idol (Marriage)

akafferI find it kind of hard to believe that I've never posted a Cut of the Day by ex-Kissing Book frontman Andrew Kaffer, but a cursory LocalCut search confirms it. So, here's a laidback, loungey electro-acoustic number from 2006's Idle Idol, Kaffer's proper solo debut. You might recognize his voice from various Magic Marker efforts: the House Full of Friends or We Can Still Be Friends comps—or perhaps actual Magic Marker back-in-the-day house shows. Kaffer's also appeared on States Rights' '04 comp, Own Zone, among others.

Point is, dude's been around for awhile. And this is one of my favorite tracks by him (stay tuned for my fave Kissing Book track, coming soon; might as well have a regular Kaffer retrospective now that I've realized my oversight, eh?). Why a fave? Well, "Times Two" has romantic, let's-hibernate lyrics; a shuffling, inorganic backbeat; and a laidback, Sea & Cake-ish groove that just spells lazy backyard cocktail sippin' to my ear.

The ringing, spacy keys give it a nice futuristic touch, too, driving home the thing that's so cool about Kaffer's music—he enhances all the earnest emotional immediacy of singer-songwriter fare, but embellishes it with creative production, subtle danceability, some experimental just-plain-weirdness and an easy, breezy vibe that distracts just enough from the melodrama of his voice...and steers you right into the clouds.
