Portland Lounge Series XVI, featuring Nick Jaina, Michael Apinyakul (of Shoeshine Blue) and Michael the Blind, Tonight!

lc buttonThat's right, LocalCut readers: It's time, once again, for our (free!) live interview-and-intimate set event, the Portland Lounge Series. Tonight, Sunday, Feb. 24, at the Towne Lounge (714 SW 20th Place), yours truly will be chatting with macabre folkster Nick Jaina, acoustic bluesman Michael Apinyakul and “very, very, very, very nearsighted” folk-popper Michael the Blind. You'll get to know each of these talented young gents a bit better on Sunday night, but let's meet 'em in brief right now:

Headlining the night is none other than Nick Jaina, who'll be playing fresh off a doubled-up night of CD release shows (tonight at Mississippi Studios, 7 & 10 pm). We'll be chatting about his rules of the road, his new album, Wool, and perfecting the art of a dry sense of humor.

Smack in the middle we've got Michael Apinyakul, frontman for local blues-folk trio Shoeshine Blue. I'll ask him how he keeps his fingers warm when performing in snowy landscapes, what shoe polish he prefers (well, maybe not that) and how he got so darn good at that ol' six-string!

And opening up this fine evening of local music is Michael the Blind, whose furvor-filled folk numbers remind me a bit of the Mountain Goats' John Darnielle—though Michael the Blind's approach is a bit more manic and his voice a bit more haunting. Levasseur (that's his real last name) and I will discuss his penchant for list-making, his absurdly prolific year and his tendency toward "fuck off" songs.
