Living Proof, "Build it Up," Roots to Branches (Self-Released)

The opening track of Prem and Flowtope's freshman album resonates with bubbling horns and airy beats—and plenty of positivity. Trading punchy verses over a bop-along organ, the duo arrive time and again at the same message for their listeners: "You got to build it up / You got to feel the love." Then they repeat themselves, but turn the message inward - "WE got to build it up / WE got to feel the love." It's a small moment, but one that's telling about the duo and their future, if the promising album is any indication: they want to bring hip-hop back to its empowering roots while stretching out their own creative branches.
