We'll Miss You Dearly: Chantelle Hylton Heads For New York

coverstory24I think back to my favorite Portland shows--Do Make Say Think, DMBQ, Deerhoof, Xiu Xiu, the eight episodes of the Portland Lounge Series and on and on and on--and one person comes to mind: Chantelle Hylton, the upstanding lady behind Blackbird Presents. I mean no disrespect to the many other fantastic bookers here, but the wealth of talent she's brought to Portland and the wealth of local talent she's put on stage is unrivaled. I'm both sorry and proud to say that she will be leaving (or has left) Portland to take a job booking at New York's legendary Knitting Factory (which she was offered on her birthday).

It's late, so I'll keep it brief. I don't know what will happen with her booking roles at Towne Lounge and Someday Lounge, but she assures us "I'll be back at least once a month for a while to check on Blackbird shows and squeeze my dog, cat, boyfriend, mom, and all of you." She'll be in town next week to pack and on June 5th at Holocene there will be a proper farewell/congratulations show with The Joggers, Grails, Holysons, Dolorean, and DJ BJ. If you feel like playing some music that night, please send an email along to the appropriate people. If I could I would, but all I can do is write nice things...but, even then, I'm still falling short. Portland loves you.
