Labor Union, Construction Firm the Latest Big Donors to School-Construction Campaign

Latest donations to Portlanders for Schools

Another week, another round of substantial donations to the campaign for Portland Public Schools' $548 million construction bond on the May 17 ballot.

On Jan. 7, Stacy and Witbeck, the construction firm specializing in public-transit projects, gave $25,000 to the Portlanders for Schools political action committee. The Pacific Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters gave $10,000 to the PAC. And Trudy Sargent, a member of the Portland School Board, gave $500. She's the second of seven school board members to donate so far; Bobbie Regan already gave $1,000.

On Jan. 24, the Portland School Board will consider whether to refer a second money measure—a local-option operating levy—to the May ballot. PPS currently has an operating levy in effect, but it expires in 2012. However, several school board members have said it may make sense to push a levy renewal sooner and at the same time as the construction-bond campaign.
