The discipline cases are rolling out of the
Portland Police Bureau today.
Hours after Police Chief
Mike Reese announced the
firing of Officer Ronald Frashour in the fatal shooting of Aaron Campbell, the chief released this
statement announcing Capt.
Mark Kruger's punishment for honoring German soldiers from the Nazi era with plaques on Rocky Butte.
Reese says in his
discipline letter [PDF] to Kruger that he will get an 80-hour unpaid suspension, some "intensive training" under something called “Tools for Tolerance” or some similar training; and will participate in a mentorship arrangement between six months and two years. Reese says the length of the mentorship will be determined by himself and Mayor Sam Adams.
Kruger, who has waived his right to arbitration in the case, also released this
letter of apology [PDF] in which he describes himself as a wartime memorabilia hobbyist and denies any admiration of Nazism or any knowledge that one of the officers he honored may have been a war criminal.
