I can't believe I missed the Wild Flag show. No, really: After watching video of the new Portland supergroup play a song called "Future Crimes" five times in a row—and standing up and jeopardizing the whole knee rehab-thing by playing some windmill air guitar in my cubicle—I can safely say that this is the closet thing we're going to get to seeing Sleater-Kinney play in a long time. While Corin Tucker is off peddling her solid and refined solo record, the other two members, Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss, are kicking some serious ass in their new band. Wild Flag played its Portland debut on Saturday night at the Doug Fir, a set filled with songs that no one (save a few hundred folks in Olympia) had heard before and a few choice covers, and from all the video I can find online it was an incredible show. Photographer Jason Quigley was in the front row, and he kindly snapped a few pictures for us. Wild Flag, if you're reading this, please promise me you will come back soon. Maybe a New Year's Eve show? Or a private performance in my basement? Let's work something out, friends. Here are Quigley's photos and clips of the band playing "Future Crimes" and a cover of the Standells' "Dirty Water."
