Portland Peace Activists Host Candlelight Vigil Tonight

Portland activists are holding a candlelight vigil downtown tonight in honor of nine Midwest anti-war activists who were ordered to appear before a grand jury in Chicago by U.S. Attorney General Patrick Fitzgerald.

The FBI delivered grand jury subpoenas in December after raiding the homes of the anti-war activists in Illinois, Minnesota and Michigan. Agents took the activists' computers, phones and personal documents like notebooks, diaries and their children's artwork.

The vigil, which will also occur tonight in 50 cities nationally and worldwide, is at 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm at the Federal Building at 1220 SW 3rd Ave.

"Our idea is to stand with them," says Portland activist Megan Hise, "to have actions across the country to show that opposing war is not a crime, that solidarity is not a crime."
