Portland Students Raise Cash for Schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan

MLC students donate to Central Asia InstituteMetropolitan Learning Center students

First- and second-graders at Northwest Portland's Metropolitan Learning Center have collected $1,140.37 in pennies, loose change and allowance money to help build new schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The young students found inspiration in Greg Mortenson's "Three Cups of Tea," the best-selling book that chronicles Mortenson's work in those two countries with the Montana-based Central Asia Institute.

"Not bad for 26 little kiddos!," says John Walrod, the MLC teacher who led the students.
