PDX Pop Now! isn't just Portland's biggest and best annual all-ages music event. For the folks who volunteer with and operate PPN, the notion of "all-ages" extends far beyond creating a free, inclusionary event that allows kids not old enough to enter clubs to experience the power of live music up close -- it's a philosophy that also includes children who might not even be old enough to leave the house without adult supervision.
That's why the organization in recent years has taken to conducting outreach programs at local middle schools and literally bringing music to kids. This year's first in-school event takes place this Friday at HB Lee Middle School. Local rapper Tope and psyche-pop group AAN will perform, while Tom Filepp of Cars & Trains will give a presentation about playing live and the basics of sound. There will be a lyric writing workshop helmed by the Rock and Roll Camp for Girls and a participatory art project from Film Action Oregon. Finally, My Voice Music, Ethos and Christine Jigau will bring in a variety of instruments for the students to mess around with. Impromptu amateur jam sessions!
