Sesame Street Blues

We're happy to learn Elmo and his cronies from Sesame Street are coming to Portland in mid-May for a three-day stint.

According to a blurb for this "Elmo's Healthy Heroes" musical coming to the Memorial Coliseum, "When Super Grover loses his superness, Sesame Street needs a hero! Never fear, Elmo and his team of Healthy Heroes are here. Teaching lessons of healthy habits through song and dance, Elmo, Abby Cadabby and your favorite Sesame Street friends will explore exercise, nutrition, sleep/energy and hygiene – all in a quest to put the "super" back in Super Grover. It's Elmo's Healthy Heroes to the rescue!"

Indeed Sesame Street is in need of heroes, given that federal support for public broadcasting this week faces a congressional budget axe. And public broadcasting's defenders—among them U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.)—are trotting out "Arthur," "Elmo" and all the PBS kiddie characters as soldiers in this war of words.
