A Multnomah County judge this afternoon sealed new affidavits in U.S. Rep. David Wu's pending divorce from Michelle Wu.
Today's record-sealing order by Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Tom Ryan cites the best interest of Wu's 13-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter as the reason.
The order shields from public view affidavits filed April 4 that potentially could have embarrassed Wu, whose questionable judgment came under scrutiny in recent weeks.
Among other things, the seven-term Democratic lawmaker has come under fire for driving away several long-time staffers and aides amid a swirl of puzzling acts. In October 2010, for example, Wu impersonated his children by sending emails from his federally issued BlackBerry to staffers and aides in their name.
Wu initially filed for separation from his second wife in Lincoln County in December 2009, 13 years after the two were married. But because neither party lives there, a judge ordered the venue changed to Multnomah County in August 2010.
According to records in Wu's divorce that are public, the embattled congressman is supposed to appear in Multnomah County Court on May 31 to discuss parenting time and spousal support. According to those same records, Wu currently provides Michelle Wu $1,500 a month.
