Grant Constitution Team Makes Top 10 in D.C.

The juggernaut that is the Grant High Constitution Team learned today that they are in the top 10 of the National Constitution Finals. The squad of high-school students competed with the best in the country in the D.C. area over the weekend, facing varied questions about executive power; immigration reform; the role of media as watchdog; and what, if any, Constitutional protections Facebook users deserve.

Grant Senior Max Cowan, one of the competitors, said that he and his teammates learned tonight of their success around 9:30 pm Eastern Standard Time (not long before the buzz began in Washington, D.C., that President Obama was going to announce the death of Osama Bin Laden). "We were plenty scared, we talked to a lot of other teams earlier this evening at dinner and they were really bright—we were all holding hands when we were named," Cowan said. 

The team will compete in the final round tomorrow (Monday) in the House Judiciary Committee hearing room. When asked which was the team to beat, Cowan did not hesitate: "California."

For Grant, this is almost getting to be old news. The public high school has dominated the state competition over the past decade—and was in the top 10 nationally as recently as 2008, when it placed third.
