William Hurt Returning to Artists Rep, Bringing Son Along

Academy Award-winning actor William Hurt will return to Portland this October to perform in Artists Repertory Theatre's production of the Harold Pinter play No Man's Land. It will be Hurt's fourth appearance at Artists Rep, having previously starred in The Drawer Boy in 2004, Vanya in 2006 and most recently Long Day's Journey into Night in 2010.

What brings an actor of Hurt's profile to perform with a small Portland company with such regularity? History. Artist Rep's artistic director, Allen Nause, worked with Hurt in 1975 at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and the two have remained friends since. Nause will perform alongside Hurt in No Man's Land.

This time, Hurt isn't coming alone; he's bringing along his son, Alex Hurt, a fresh graduate of NYU Tisch's masters of arts program. It isn't the first time Hurt has come to Portland with company, either: Vanya featured a terrible performance by Hurt's then-girlfriend, Australian soap star Krista Vendy. I hope for better from Alex. The NYT liked him well enough in 2008 to give his Portland visit some promise.
